What makes a good pre-workout?

We all love pre-workout drinks. They get us amped up first thing in the morning or serve as the oh so important pick me up for those that workout later in the day. HOWEVER, not all pre-workouts are created equally. With so many options out there today, it can be difficult to know how to separate the pre-workout winners from the losers.

First, let’s take a look at what pre-workouts are designed to do. A high-quality pre-workout product should increase

  • Strength
  • Blood flow (pump)
  • Focus
  • Stamina
  • Overall athletic performance

With those goals in mind, what are the most important ingredients to consider when choosing a pre-workout? First…let’s address the difference between a quality list of ingredients and a proprietary blend. Proprietary blends are, more often that not…underdosed garbage. They look impressive due to the sheer number of different ingredients; however, we have no way of knowing how much of what is actually in that blend. Transparent labels are the way to go.

Now on to the ingredients

  1. Citrulline

A naturally occurring amino acids produced in the body from other amino acids you ingest.

  • Enhanced energy level
  • Reduced lactic acid accumulation
  • Enhanced muscle pumps
  • Increased growth hormone release
  • Improved utilization of branched chain amino acids
  1. Beta-alanine

A naturally occurring amino acid that is converted into carnosine during digestion.

  • Reduced overall fatigue
  • Increased anaerobic output
  • Increased endurance
  • Enhanced muscle pumps
  1. Glycerol

A simple polyol compound with strong osmotic properties (attracts and binds large amounts of fluid). By attracting more fluid in the blood vessels and the muscles, glycerol enhances the volume of the muscles, helping you look bigger and fuller.

  • Increased fluid shuttled to muscles
  • Massive muscle pumps
  1. Caffeine

A nervous system stimulant shown to directly potentiate skeletal muscle force, work and power.

  • Boosts metabolism
  • Increased energy
  • Increased strength
  • Enhanced endurance
  1. Yohimbine

A powerful stimulant and alpha-2 adrenergic receptor antagonist, shown to increase blood flow to the skin's surface, upper, and lower extremities of the body.

  • Improved blood flow and circulation
  • Increased metabolism
  • Increased sensory effects leading to heightened alertness

While there are certainly a number of other ingredients that can be useful in a pre-workout formula, the five above lend to an elevated workout experience. That’s why Blow Out is quickly becoming the hottest pre-workout of 2020!
